Five Questions

What is professional / industrial experience?

-Work within the art industry as a professional, alongside other designers, publishers, photographers, art directors, editors etc.
-Knowing what to do with briefs.
-Summarise research findings.
-Identify major trends, issues, challenges etc.
-Learn from mistakes
-Mass producing own work on a professional standard.


Why is professional / Industrial experience important for PPD?

-It helps to prepare us for finishing the course and heading out into the industry.
-It allows us to be ready for the industry and what it has in store for us in the future.
-It shows us how the skills we have learned throughout the course are applicable to working in the industry.
-It will give us a better understanding of the Graphic Design industry
-A clearer knowledge of what employers are looking for in possible employees.


How do you gain professional / Industrial experience, and what form does it take?

-Pushing any contacts already in based in the art industry to support your hunt for jobs, e.g. family members, friends etc.
-Developing a strong portfolio, website and business card and selling yourself to these clients.
-Finding Graphic Design companies with strong differences - be it personal opinions and identities or sheer size and fame.
-Looking for shorter work placements with print companies, advertising agencies, photography studios, magazine editors, fashion designers etc.
S-ending dozens of emails out to companies whos work you like or want to know more about, being polite - but persuasive.


What should you aim to gain from Professional / Industrial Experience?

-New skills
-Contacts
-Confidence
-A more professional attitude
-A wider range of skills
-A knowledge of the business side of things
-Contacts within the industry
-Confidence and social standing

Things that the art industry are always looking for...

-New talent
-People who are excited about the idea of working for them.
-Confidence within gaining new skills, group work, playing with ideas
-Dedication to other personal interests, society's, private commissions, travelling etc.
-Experienced, hard-working, positive students.
